From Pig Farmer to Silk Producer

Not everyone finds their passion right away. Sometimes it takes a detour.

I am Patrick Thürig. Born in 1994, I took over the farm in 2020 and have been searching ever since for what agriculture can mean today. Pig farming is my everyday life, my craft, my life. Since 2023, silk production has been added.

Price fluctuations are part of agriculture. But recently they became so extreme that it was clear: a second source of income was needed. I looked for a niche business, considered many options, but it always failed. Too little land, wrong zone, or the organization behind it didn't suit me.

And then, almost by chance, I came across silk. At a weaving course, I held this material in my hands for the first time. The shine, the lightness, the feel immediately captivated me. At that time, I didn't even know what silk truly was or how it was produced.

So I researched. And in doing so, I stumbled upon something amazing: silk is being produced in Switzerland again. Through SwissSilk, the Swiss producers' association, I found my way in. They were still looking for producers, and so in June 2023, I was able to undertake my first trial rearing with 500 caterpillars. From then on, there was no turning back.

What drives me every day

In silk production, nothing is wasted. Cocoons, fibers, pupae, everything is fully and meaningfully processed. This aligns with my understanding of agriculture: respectful, sustainable, without waste.

What fascinates me again and again, however, is the medical aspect of silk. Silk can support healing processes in the human body, regenerate skin, and is even used today in surgery and implant medicine. This way, I can not only create beautiful products but also help people. This gives my work a meaning that extends far beyond the farm.
